Critical Thinking or Settling?

Critical Thinking or Settling?

Why has coaching become such an important part of our modern society? We could probably gather that the fast pace, the hectic schedules and vast opportunities to choose from, and dare I say, destiny, have brought us to this moment.

Maybe necessity is the mother of invention?

Consider this for a moment. Is it possible that life coaching actually teaches a lost art? Maybe. I would submit that life coaching gives our society back something that has indeed, been left behind. That would be the skill of critical thinking.

Clear, Rational, Open-minded, Informed

So, what is critical thinking?

Critical thinking is disciplined thinking that is clear, rational, open-minded, and informed by evidence.1 If we are not thinking like this we get something like the following mindset:

"I'm the worst person ever. I can't do anything right. I'm not smart enough. No matter what I do it always goes wrong. I don't know why, I just know it's not working!"

Do you feel like you are the worst person ever? If that is how you are informed, a coach is going to ask, "what is the truth about that?" If we are truthful we know that we are not the worst person ever. In fact, we may be doing a lot of good and your coach is going to draw that out of you.

Your coach is going to walk with you to identify your bad thinking and onboard the truth. They are going to help you develop a clear, rational, open-minded, and truthfully informed thought process.

This simple idea is incredibly important to our success. When we are informed by the "real" evidence, we think differently. A life coach is going help you with clarity and rationale. If we are making life decisions that are not based on the truth we aren't going to go anywhere. We will continue to find ourselves stuck in a loop of self-defeating thinking and empty efforts.

In this loop of bad thinking, we can end up settling. So, what does settling mean?

It means, to accept something less ideal or worse than what one really wanted.2 Oh, dear! Settling is really a much weaker decision making process. If your thinking is bad, your results will be bad.

Conduct Your Symphony

There are tried and true techniques to success. Slow things down, simplify, work hard, work smart, get your rest, set goals. These techniques are like an orchestra ready to play the first note!

Yes! Those are all good things. Yet, if you have an orchestra you may not exactly have a symphony. Those things are the right things, but how do you direct this orchestra to get the right sound? In a symphony we can have all the skilled musicians, all the instruments and all the sheet music but one thing is still missing... a conductor.

Conductor
a person who directs an orchestra or chorus, communicating to the performers by motions of a baton or the hands his or her interpretation of the music.3

Learn to conduct your life like a real pro. If you haven't been able to do this on your own, then onboard the very people who are skilled at helping you be the Conductor of your life. That would be a life coach.
